ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026. In Qatar, valid ISO 9001:2015 certificates remain usable during transition, which ends on 30 September 2029. Compare your quality management system with the published requirements, then agree a transition audit plan with your certification body. (ISO standard record; Global ACI transition notice.)
Is ISO 9001:2026 now published, and what does that mean for Qatar?
Yes. ISO lists ISO 9001:2026 as the published sixth edition of its quality management systems standard, replacing ISO 9001:2015 as the current edition. Publication allows organisations to assess the final requirements rather than rely on draft summaries. It does not automatically change an existing certificate or mean that every certification body can already issue an accredited 2026 certificate.
ISO 9001 is an international standard; there is no separate Qatar edition. A business in Doha, an energy supplier in Ras Laffan, and a contractor elsewhere in Qatar apply the same requirements to their own operations, customers and applicable obligations. Certification remains voluntary unless a contract, tender or customer requires it.
What changed between ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 9001:2026?
The new edition keeps the management system structure while refining several requirements. Its main changes concern leadership, quality culture, the link between quality policy and business direction, clearer treatment of risks and opportunities, employee awareness, and guidance in Annex A. Review the final text against your processes before deciding which documents or practices need updating.
| Area | What to check in your organisation |
|---|---|
| Leadership and quality culture, clause 5.1 | How leaders promote quality culture and ethical behaviour through decisions and day-to-day practices. |
| Quality policy, clause 5.2 | Whether the policy reflects the organisation's context and supports its strategic direction. |
| Risks and opportunities, clause 6.1 | How the organisation decides on actions to address risks and pursue opportunities. |
| Planning changes, clause 6.3 | How changes are communicated, monitored and reviewed for effectiveness. |
| Awareness, clause 7.3 | Whether relevant people understand their contribution to quality culture and ethical behaviour. |
| Management review, clause 9.3.2 | Whether reviews address relevant changes in interested parties' needs and expectations. |
These are selected changes, not a substitute for the standard. Global ACI's transition requirements also describe revised guidance in Annex A and the removal of Annex B. ISO says the 2026 edition carries forward the climate change consideration introduced by the 2024 amendment; treat it as an existing consideration, not an entirely new climate certification requirement.
When is the ISO 9001:2026 transition deadline?
30 September 2029 is the transition end date for existing accredited ISO 9001:2015 certifications under Global ACI's requirements. The period gives certified organisations time to update their systems and complete a transition audit. An earlier expiry date on your own certificate still matters, so confirm your surveillance, recertification and transition schedule with the body that issued it.
| Date | What it means |
|---|---|
| 16 September 2026 | ISO published ISO 9001:2026. |
| 31 March 2028 | From this date, new or initial accredited certificates may be issued only to ISO 9001:2026. |
| 30 September 2029 | End of the transition for existing accredited ISO 9001:2015 certificates. |
These dates come from Global ACI's published transition requirements. The 2028 date concerns new initial certificates; the 2029 date concerns existing 2015 certificates. Keeping those two groups separate is important when planning a tender or explaining certificate status to a customer.
Does an existing ISO 9001:2015 certificate remain valid?
Yes. A valid ISO 9001:2015 certificate did not become invalid when the 2026 edition was published. It remains subject to its stated expiry date, normal surveillance requirements and the formal transition rules. Continue describing the certificate as ISO 9001:2015 until your certification body completes the transition audit, makes its decision and issues the updated certificate.
Global ACI permits the transition audit to take place during surveillance or recertification, or as a separate audit. Your certification body decides its arrangements and may need additional audit time depending on the changes to your system. Accredited ISO 9001:2015 certification cannot remain valid beyond the transition end date of 30 September 2029.
If we need our first ISO 9001 certificate, which edition should we choose?
Ask the accredited certification body which edition it can certify to and when its 2026 accreditation will be ready. The new standard is published, but an accredited 2026 certificate depends on the body's transition. New initial 2015 certifications may remain possible during the permitted period; from 31 March 2028, new initial accredited certificates must use ISO 9001:2026.
If a tender names a particular edition, check the buyer's wording before choosing an audit date. If you are building a quality system now, use the published 2026 text as the basis for planning where feasible, while agreeing the certification route with the certification body. Qdot's ISO 9001 certification guide for Qatar explains the general certification process.
What should a Qatar organisation do first to prepare?
Begin with a short, owned transition plan rather than a wholesale document rewrite. Obtain the published standard, check your certificate and audit dates, identify which requirements have changed, and assign process owners to review real evidence. Then agree with your certification body how the transition audit will fit your surveillance or recertification cycle.
- Confirm your starting point. Record the certificate's edition, scope, issuing body, expiry date and next scheduled audit.
- Compare requirements with practice. Review leadership decisions, quality policy, risks and opportunities, awareness, change planning and management review.
- Collect evidence. Use actual objectives, process results, audit findings, customer feedback and management review decisions; avoid relying on a rewritten manual alone.
- Assign actions and training. Give each gap an owner, due date and evidence of completion.
- Agree the audit plan. Ask the certification body when it can assess ISO 9001:2026 and whether extra audit time is expected.
For Qatar businesses serving construction, energy, logistics or facilities clients, also check which edition their contracts and supplier portals name. A buyer's requirement may call for an explanation of your transition timetable even while your valid certificate still says ISO 9001:2015.
How can you run a useful gap analysis without rewriting every procedure?
A useful gap analysis compares each relevant 2026 requirement with how your system works today, then records the evidence and any action needed. Start with changed requirements and weak processes already found in audits or complaints. Keep documents that still match practice. Update a procedure only when the new text or an actual operational gap calls for it.
For example, ask leaders how they promote quality culture, review whether the quality policy supports business direction, and test whether opportunity planning leads to decisions. Check whether employee awareness reflects what people do in their roles. Review management review records for changes in interested parties' needs. ISO's revised Annex A can help explain intent, but it is informative guidance, not a separate certification standard.
Do not assume that every organisation needs a new manual, a separate risk register or a new software platform. The appropriate evidence depends on the business and its processes. Use findings from your ISO 9001 consultancy review to prioritise meaningful changes.
Who needs training, and what will the transition audit check?
Train people according to their responsibilities. Leaders need to understand decisions and resources; process owners need changes affecting their work; employees need practical awareness; and internal auditors need to assess the revised requirements. Global ACI says a transition audit should review the changed requirements, changes to the organisation's context and any other needed system updates.
- Leadership: Quality culture, strategic alignment and transition resources.
- Process owners: Applicable changes, evidence, risks, opportunities and controls.
- Employees: What changes in their daily work, through relevant ISO 9001 awareness training.
- Internal auditors: The revised criteria, evidence and reporting approach; internal auditor training in Qatar can support this.
The certification body conducts the transition audit and decides on certification. Global ACI allows a remote transition audit where the body can demonstrate that the audit objectives are met. Ask your body what approach it will use for your site and scope.
What should Qatar procurement teams check during the transition?
Check the edition, certificate validity, scope and any edition-specific wording in a tender or supplier registration. A valid 2015 certificate should be represented accurately as a 2015 certificate; a transition plan is not a 2026 certificate. If a buyer requests the new edition, ask when it must be held and confirm the certification body's audit schedule.
Keep a short record of the agreed plan so sales, bid and quality teams give customers the same answer. Where a contract accepts a current valid ISO 9001 certificate, do not assume the publication date alone changed its terms. Where it expressly asks for 2026, verify the buyer's acceptance criteria directly.
How can Qdot support an ISO 9001:2026 transition in Qatar?
Qdot can help Qatar organisations review their existing quality management system, compare it with the published edition, train relevant teams and prepare evidence for the transition audit. Qdot is a consultancy and training provider, not the body that issues an ISO 9001 certificate. An independent accredited certification body performs the certification audit and makes the certification decision.
For organisations combining quality and environmental management, coordinate this work with the separate ISO 14001:2026 transition where relevant.
FAQs
An organisation with a valid accredited ISO 9001:2015 certificate can plan its transition before 30 September 2029, but the timing should be agreed with its certification body and coordinated with the existing surveillance or recertification cycle. From 31 March 2028, new and initial accredited certifications may only be issued to ISO 9001:2026.
Yes. ISO says ISO 9001:2026 carries forward consideration of climate change from the 2024 amendment to ISO 9001:2015. Review whether climate change is relevant to your organisation's context and interested parties, and retain evidence of your reasoning. This does not mean every Qatar organisation must set a climate target as an ISO 9001 requirement.
No. Keep documents and records that still describe effective processes and meet the revised requirements. A gap analysis should identify where a requirement, process or actual practice calls for a change. Focus on useful evidence and staff understanding rather than changing document dates or terminology without improving how the quality management system works.
Possibly. Global ACI permits a certification body to conduct a transition audit remotely if it can show that the audit objectives will still be met. The body decides whether remote methods suit your processes, sites and scope, and whether additional time is needed. Confirm the format and evidence requirements directly with your certification body before booking.
